Detroit Lions:
James Houston and Aidan Hutchinson are a powerful and youthful pass-rushing tandem for Detroit. After Richard Dent in 1990, Hutchinson was the first NFL player to have 9.5 sacks and three interceptions in a single season last year. During the first seven career games (eight), Houston has racked up the most sacks of any player since sacks were first recorded in 1982. Since 1982, Hutchinson and Houston were the first rookie tandem to record at least seven sacks in a single season.
Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Lions, has also had a career turnaround. Goff averaged 6.9 yards per attempt over his first 22 games as a Lion, throwing 33 touchdowns against 15 interceptions, as Detroit finished 5-16-1. In his last nine games, he has thrown 15 touchdowns and zero interceptions while averaging 7.7 yards per attempt. During that time, the Lions are 7-2. Choose your team from this list.
Kansas City Chiefs:
After yet another outstanding season, Patrick Mahomes is back. The two-time Super Bowl winner was the league leader in throwing touchdowns (41), as well as passing yards (5,250). It was his highest completion percentage of 67.1 in his career. He goes up against the 30th-ranked Lions defense (245.8 yards per game) versus the pass on Thursday.
The Chiefs' success in throwing can be attributed, in part, to their defense of the offensive line. Kansas City, behind guard Joe Thuney and center Creed Humphrey, allowed just 26 sacks in the previous season, which was third fewest in the league. With a pass block victory percentage of 98.9%, Thuney topped all NFL lineman; Humphrey came in second (98.1%).
