Carolina Panthers what to watch:
Leading the way with 72 running yards from Miles Sanders, the Panthers gained 154 yards on 4.8 yards per carry in the first game. In 2022, Carolina ranked within the top 10 in the NFL in terms of rushing yards (2,210). Last season, the Panthers also had above-average numbers for running touchdowns (16) and yards per carry (4.6), and over a sizable sample size, their ball security was excellent. In 2022, Carolina only gave up 21 touchdowns, lost eight fumbles, and had a solid 56.5% touchdown conversion rate when driving into the red zone.
Following No. 1 overall selection Bryce Young, Sanders is a recent addition to Carolina's offensive lineup. The veteran rushed for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Eagles in the previous campaign.
New Orleans Saints what to watch:
It's a friendly battle between a young Panthers offense and a formidable defensive unit in New Orleans. Last week, Carolina managed just 10 points and less than 300 total yards in a loss to Atlanta. With three turnovers during the game, the Panthers managed just 3.9 yards per play and 3.2 yards per pass attempt. Nineteen times was Bryce Young subjected to pressure by Carolina's offensive line. The Panthers, who ranked No. 28 or worse in total offense, first downs, passing yards, passing touchdowns, and third down efficiency in 2022, are also coming off a poor offensive campaign.
A week ago, the Saints caused chaos with three takeaways while giving up just 15 scores and 285 total yards to the Titans. With rankings in the top five for total defense, passing defense, passing touchdowns allowed, completion percentage, and sacks in 2022, New Orleans has a strong defensive heritage as well. Additionally, the Saints allowed just 20.3 points per game the previous season, and in that sample, opponents only scored touchdowns on 50% of their visits into the red zone.
